Uhrtopie Timekeeper incorporates a series of clocks that offer alternate measurements of time based on human perceptions.
Uhrtopie Timekeeper involves a theoretical and practical examination of our relationship with time. Everyone knows the paradox of time; even if time can be measured and defined quantitatively, the personal feeling of time passing by is not always the same. Regular clocks follow standardised measurements of time. The Uhrtopie clocks offer new time formats based on personal feelings.
The first clock family is titled The Petits Fours. These clocks question our understanding of time. Each clock portrays an element of time from a different viewpoint. The minute clock, for example, visualises the fact that sometimes time seems to run quickly and sometimes it seems to stand still. For five minutes, the clock hand will move very slowly; for a subsequent five minutes, it will move quickly. Time is running out!
In contrast to The Petits Fours clocks, which break down time into pieces, the K64 Timekeeper seems to dissolve time. K64 is a kinetic object that visualises the flow of time. K64’s clock hands follow two fictive points. These points indicate the position of the hour and minute hands you would find on a common clock face.
The idea is based on a thought experiment; what would happen if a large number of hands showed the time? Could you not see the forest for the trees? Telling the time with K64 requires visual analysis. It is hoped that the user will perceive the flowing movement as inspiring and calming. |
